This is the constellation Cygnus the Swan, as you would see it with your eyes. It looks rather dull in a short-exposure picture like this.

 

 

 

Yet at an infrared wavelength of 60m this area of the sky looks very different. In this infrared light we can see new born stars buried in dust clouds that lie between us and the center of our Galaxy.

 

So when you see an astronomical image, the first question you should ask is whether the picture is visible light. If the answer is yes, the next question you should ask is: is this TRUE color?
